Paving the way towards zero-emission and robust inland shipping

The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) has awarded a prestigious research grant to a consortium led by Delft University of Technology, Assistant Professor Dr. Alex Kirichek. The PATH2ZERO project will target the transformation towards zero-emission inland shipping, collaborating closely with the sector’s key players.

Research Objectives

A Collaborative Initiative

The consortium brings together a dynamic team of researchers, commercial enterprises, and social organizations dedicated to fostering sustainable business models and actionable strategies for the industry. This initiative not only supports skippers and shippers but also involves the entire inland navigation chain in the quest for sustainability.

Understanding Transition Needs

A core component of the research involves in-depth analysis to determine what the transition to zero emissions entails for all stakeholders, including skippers, shippers, and financial institutions. This comprehensive approach ensures that every facet of the industry is considered.

Development of a Digital Twin

One of the groundbreaking approaches of PATH2ZERO is the development of a virtual model of the inland shipping system. This digital twin will simulate the real system with all its components, focusing on three main aspects: individual vessels, logistics chains, and infrastructure.

Strategy and Intervention

Exploring Potential Interventions

The project will examine a range of interventions, from the adoption of new technologies for individual vessels to overarching policy measures that could be applied to entire shipping corridors. The effectiveness of these interventions will be tested against future scenarios using the digital twin to identify the most efficient strategies for achieving zero emissions.

Collaboration and Support

Backed by Government and Industry – PATH2ZERO is part of the NWA research program ‘Zero-emission inland shipping,’ initiated by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management (I&W) and supported by the top sector for logistics (Dinalog). This collaboration highlights the commitment of both governmental bodies and industry leaders to a sustainable future in inland shipping.
